Judge Weeramantry and his work

VISION – HARNESSING GLOBAL WISDOM IN THE CAUSE OF PEACE AND JUSTICE
METHODOLOGY – UNIVERSALISING AND BROADENING THE PERSPECTIVES
OF DOMESTIC AND INTERNATIONAL LAW

A common thread that runs through the work of Judge C.G Weeramantry over several decades and in many fields is the theme of Harnessing Global Wisdom in the Pursuit of Peace. The central philosophy underlying his work is that there are in all cultures and civilizations vast reservoirs of untapped wisdom which need to be universalized and drawn into the service of the human family, rather than being permitted to lie in separate compartments unused by and unknown to those belonging to other groups.

A principal discipline through which this can be achieved is law, both domestic and international , but paradoxically the law has to a large extent, and sometimes totally, neglected these universal sources and has compartmentalised itself into a narrow, formalistic and isolated discipline.

Topics Addressed

Among the topics Judge Weeramantry has researched and written upon, are the topics listed to the left. His contributions take the form of books, articles, chapters in books and addresses:

This body of work aims at building bridges between different cultures, between different disciplines and between different religions. Apart from spreading the relevant information as widely as possible, it aims also at integrating the resulting insights into International Law. International Law needs to be universalized if it is to command universal authority and not to be seen as a product of any one cultural group.
